Topic

The constant development of digital humanities over the last few decades has contributed to real changes in practices within the sciences of antiquity and philology. Classical philology is no exception, and new publishing formats for ancient texts have emerged, from digital libraries to natively digital editions. At the same time, the traditional edition, sometimes called the paper edition, remains one of the essential formats for philological works, thanks to its distribution by renowned scientific publishers (Les Belles Lettres, B.G. Teubner...). But while the editorial formats chosen by philologists may differ in terms of whether or not they include a digital component, the same methodology is applied when it comes to publishing ancient texts. What's more, the main transformations brought about by Digital Humanities concern the digital or physical format as much as the tools used to build a scientific edition.
The aim of this symposium is to focus on the critical publishing chain, and to take stock of the new tools that enable publishers, whatever their chosen format, to process their data more easily, facilitate their work and renew publishing practices.

The symposium will be held over three days, alternating mornings devoted to lectures on transformations linked to digital tools and methods (no registration required) and afternoons devoted to workshops (registration required).  The first day will be devoted to the possibilities offered by automatic character recognition, the second to text alignment, and the third to automatic stemming. Conferences will also be accessible by videoconference (workshops will be in person only).

As the number of places for the workshops is limited (20 participants), interested candidates are invited to register by  December 13, 2023 (Wednesday) at the following address: calame-clavier@sciencesconf.org

Prerequisites for workshop registration :
    - Master the basics of TEI: a minima by having completed the MOOC "Digital Scholarly Editions" before the date of the conference (1 to 2 days of practice) https://teach.dariah.eu/mod/page/view.php?id=332
    - Provide a 1-page description of your publishing project (in preparation or in progress), as well as a batch or extract of your data (link to manuscript or print; TEI files or text format). This data will only be used to tailor workshops to participants' needs, and will be deleted afterwards.
